The Subscription Audit: A 20-Minute Routine That Saves Most Households $400 a Year

Streaming, apps, meal kits, razors, cloud storage. The average household pays for subscriptions it has forgotten. Here is how to find them and renegotiate the rest.

Subscriptions are sold on convenience and retained through inertia. Surveys consistently find that people underestimate their monthly subscription spend by half or more. The fix is not willpower; it is a short, repeatable audit done twice a year.

Step 1: Find everything (10 minutes)

  • Export 90 days of transactions from every card and bank account. Search for recurring amounts.
  • Check app-store subscription pages on every phone and tablet in the house – these are the most forgotten.
  • Search your inbox for “your subscription”, “renewal” and “receipt”.
  • Check for annual charges from the previous year that will recur: domain names, software, insurance add-ons, memberships.

Step 2: Sort into three piles (5 minutes)

  1. Keep: used weekly, priced fairly.
  2. Negotiate: used, but the price has crept up or a better plan exists.
  3. Cancel: not used in 60 days, duplicated by another service, or forgotten entirely.

Step 3: Cancel and negotiate (5 minutes)

Cancel the third pile immediately. For the second pile, start the cancellation flow – many services present a retention offer (typically 30-50% off for three to six months) before you confirm. For software, check whether an annual plan or a verified coupon code beats the monthly rate; we list introductory and renewal codes on brand pages for services like VPNs, hosting and meditation apps.

Common findings

Category Typical waste found
Streaming video 2-3 overlapping services; rotate monthly instead
Cloud storage Paying on two platforms for the same photos
Fitness apps Annual renewals after a January trial
Meal kits / boxes Weeks not skipped during holidays
Delivery memberships Fewer orders than the break-even point

Prevention

  • Use a virtual card with a spending cap for trials, so they cannot silently convert.
  • Add renewal dates to your calendar the day you subscribe.
  • Turn on app-store notifications for upcoming renewals.
  • Repeat this audit in six months. It gets faster every time.
