Direct-to-Consumer Brands vs Marketplaces: Where Should You Actually Buy?

The same product is often available from the brand, from a marketplace and from a retailer. Price is only one of five things that differ. Here is how we decide.

Ten years ago “direct-to-consumer” meant a mattress or a razor sold only from the brand’s website. Today most brands sell everywhere at once – their own store, large marketplaces, specialist retailers and department stores – and the prices, policies and even the products differ between channels. Choosing the channel is now part of choosing the product.

Five things that differ by channel

Factor Brand store Marketplace Specialist retailer
Price List price, codes common Often lowest headline, few codes Competitive, price-match policies
Range Full range, new colours first Best-sellers, variable stock Curated
Returns Brand policy, often generous Marketplace policy (strong) or seller policy (variable) Retailer policy
Authenticity Guaranteed Depends on seller and commingling Guaranteed at authorised retailers
Warranty support Direct May require proof of authorised purchase Retailer handles first line

When the brand store wins

  • You have a verified code (brand stores are where codes live).
  • You want a specific colour, size or new release.
  • The category has a counterfeit problem: cosmetics, supplements, accessories.
  • Returns or trial periods matter (mattresses, shoes, bedding).
  • Cashback portals pay more for the brand than the marketplace – common in fashion and software.

When the marketplace wins

  • Fast delivery is the priority.
  • The item is sold and shipped by the marketplace itself, with its returns process.
  • You are buying a commodity where authenticity is not a concern.
  • A marketplace-only promotion beats brand price plus code.

When the specialist retailer wins

  • You want advice, fitting or installation.
  • A price-match policy can be used against the marketplace price.
  • Extended warranties or service plans are included.

The routine

  1. Identify the exact model.
  2. Check the brand page here for a verified code and the brand’s returns terms.
  3. Check the marketplace price and who is selling it.
  4. Compare effective prices including shipping, cashback and the value of returns to you.
  5. Buy from the channel that wins on the total, not on the headline.
