Are Newsletter Sign-Up Discounts Worth It? We Tested 50 Brands
The '10% off your first order' pop-up is everywhere. We signed up to 50 brand newsletters with a fresh inbox to see what the discount really costs you in email.
The welcome pop-up is now so standard that its absence feels odd. Give us your email, get 10-15% off. We wanted to know three things: how big the discounts really are, how many emails you sign up for, and whether it is worth maintaining a separate address for it.
Method
We created a fresh inbox and subscribed to 50 brands across fashion, home, beauty, electronics and food – the categories where welcome offers are most common. We logged the offer, whether a code was issued immediately or after confirmation, any minimum spend, and then counted emails for 60 days.
What the discounts looked like
| Offer | Share of brands |
|---|---|
| 10% off | 46% |
| 15% off | 26% |
| Fixed amount ($5-$20) | 14% |
| Free shipping only | 8% |
| 20% or more | 6% |
Two-thirds of the codes arrived instantly; the rest required clicking a confirmation link first. Minimum spends were applied by 38% of brands, most commonly $50.
The email cost
Over 60 days the inbox received 1,142 emails from 50 brands – an average of 23 per brand, or roughly one every 2.6 days. The quietest brand sent four. The loudest sent 71, including three on a single Black Friday.
The useful finding: 41 of the 50 brands sent at least one better offer than the welcome discount within the 60 days – typically a 20-25% flash sale to subscribers only. Those are the codes we most often verify and list on brand pages.
Our recommendation
- Use a dedicated address. Not for privacy theatre – because the emails are genuinely useful when you want to buy and genuinely noise when you do not.
- Sign up the week you plan to buy, not months ahead. The welcome code usually expires in 7-30 days.
- Unsubscribe after the purchase unless the brand is one you buy from monthly.
- Check our brand page first. If a public code is already better than the welcome offer, you can skip the sign-up entirely.
One more trick
Many brands show the pop-up only once per browser. If you dismissed it and want the code, open the site in a private window. The offer also often appears in the site footer under “Sign up for 10% off”.
