The Black Friday Strategy Guide: What to Buy, What to Skip and When to Click

Black Friday is now a month-long season with a few genuinely great days inside it. This is how we plan our own shopping - and which categories we never buy on the day.

Black Friday stopped being a single day years ago. Prices start moving in late October, the best-known retailers run “early access” from the first week of November, and the deals continue through Cyber Monday into the second week of December. Inside that long window are a handful of real bargains surrounded by a great deal of noise. Having a plan is the only way to find them.

Before November: the list

Write down what you actually need, with the price you would be happy to pay. Research it now – model numbers, specs, the 12-month low. On the day, you will have neither the time nor the patience, and every retailer is designed to exploit that.

What is genuinely cheaper on Black Friday

  • TVs – but check whether the “doorbuster” is a derivative model made for the event.
  • Headphones, speakers and smart-home kit – mainstream models hit annual lows.
  • Last-generation laptops, tablets and phones – excellent value as new models have shipped.
  • Kitchen appliances – stand mixers, coffee machines, air fryers.
  • Mattresses and bedding – the second-best window after late May.
  • Software subscriptions – VPNs, cloud storage and creative tools run their deepest annual pricing.

What to skip

  • Toys – cheaper in the two weeks before Christmas.
  • Winter clothing – cheaper in January and February.
  • Furniture – better in January and over summer holiday weekends.
  • Fitness equipment – January.
  • Current-generation flagship phones – small discounts, usually tied to a carrier plan.

Timing inside the season

Window What happens
First week of November Early-access pricing on electronics at major retailers; many are the final price
Black Friday week Peak volume of offers; fashion and beauty join in at 20-30% sitewide
Cyber Monday Online-only; software, travel and small electronics peak
Early December Price adjustments continue quietly; stock is thinner

Tactics that work

  1. Buy early at a retailer with a Black Friday price guarantee – they will refund the difference if the price drops later in the season.
  2. Stack: sitewide sale + newsletter code + cashback portal + card offer. Fashion and beauty brands rarely block stacking during the event.
  3. Check our brand pages the morning of – we verify codes overnight and remove the ones retailers switch off for the event.
  4. Pay by credit card and keep every confirmation email.
The 90-day test still applies. If the Black Friday price is not below the lowest price of the last three months, it is not a Black Friday deal. It is a Friday.
