End-of-Financial-Year Sales: Why June Is Secretly One of the Best Months to Buy Tech
When a retailer's financial year ends, inventory becomes a liability. In Australia and for many global brands, that means June clearance on electronics, office gear and cars.
Most shoppers plan around holidays. Retailers also plan around accounting dates. When a financial year closes, every unit of unsold stock is counted, valued and, in many cases, written down. Clearing it before the date improves the numbers, so retailers discount hard in the final weeks. In Australia the year ends on 30 June and “EOFY” sales are a national event; many international brands with June year-ends run equivalent promotions worldwide.
Why June specifically
- Inventory held on 30 June must be valued and sometimes written down.
- Sales targets for the year are finalised – staff and managers push to hit them.
- Business customers rush to make deductible purchases before the deadline, which makes retailers compete for them with sharp pricing on office and tech products.
What is cheapest
- Laptops, monitors and printers: business-grade stock in particular. Retailers like Aurora Displays run their largest monitor promotions of the year.
- Office furniture: chairs, desks and storage.
- Phones from carriers: plan-linked discounts peak as carriers chase quarter-end numbers.
- Cars (if you are in the market): dealer and manufacturer bonuses are at their annual peak.
- Software: business subscriptions and annual licences are discounted to capture pre-deadline spend.
How to shop it
- Start watching in the first week of June; prices step down in the final ten days.
- Check whether the model is current or outgoing. EOFY clears both, and outgoing models are often the better value.
- Combine with a code: tech retailers rarely allow it, but accessory and furniture brands do.
- Keep receipts – if you are a business or a remote worker, some purchases may be deductible.
For shoppers outside Australia
Look at the brand’s financial calendar. Many large technology and retail groups close their year in late June or late September; their outlet pricing steps down noticeably in the final weeks of each. Even without a public “EOFY” banner, the clearance is happening – our price tracking shows the dips every year.
