Back-to-School Deals: A Parent’s Guide to Buying Less and Paying Less
Laptops, uniforms, backpacks and the long list from school. The season runs July to September and the prices move in a predictable order.
Back-to-school is the second largest shopping season of the year in many countries, and it is unusually predictable. Retailers know exactly when term starts, so pricing follows a schedule – early promotions on big-ticket items, then stationery and clothing, then last-minute clearance. Shopping in that order saves a lot.
July: technology
Laptops, tablets and headphones carry education pricing and bundle offers (a free pair of earbuds, a printer, extended warranty) throughout July. Students with a verified status should use it – the discount plus the bundle often beats a Black Friday price. Last year’s models are the value pick for schoolwork.
Early August: the list
- Stationery and supplies: loss-leaders at supermarkets and office retailers. Buy the long list here, not at the school shop.
- Backpacks and lunch gear: buy from brands with a durability guarantee – the ones that replace a broken zip for free cost less over three years than two cheap bags.
- Uniforms: specialist uniform retailers like Sprout School Uniforms discount multi-packs early in August; supermarket basics are cheapest in the same window.
- Tax-free weekends where they exist: clothing and supplies under a price cap are exempt. Combine with a code.
Late August: shoes and sport
School shoes are sized in store ideally – feet grow. Buy sports kit now; it is on promotion before the season starts and marked down again in October if you can wait.
September: what is left
Retailers clear remaining backpacks, lunch boxes and stationery at 50% or more. If you have a child who destroys bags by spring, buy the spare now.
Buying less
- Audit last year’s supplies before shopping; most households own half the list already.
- Buy quality where it is used daily (bag, shoes, water bottle) and cheap where it is lost weekly (pens, rulers).
- Check school swap schemes and second-hand groups for uniforms and sports kit.
